Your Pet’s Medication: How Peace Love Paws Cares for Your Pets

Giving medication to pets might seem simple at first glance

Just follow instructions, give the pill or liquid, and move on with your day. But in reality, it is one of the most sensitive and high responsibility tasks a pet sitter can take on.

For pet parents, trusting someone else to care for their pets is already a big step, so when medications are involved, that trust becomes even more important. A small mistake can lead to missed doses, ineffective treatment, serious health risks or death.

Why Medication Accuracy Matters

Medications are prescribed with very specific instructions for a reason. Timing, dosage, and method all play a role in how effective the treatment will be. Giving too much, too little, or at the wrong time can reduce effectiveness or cause harmful side effects.

In some cases, missing even one dose can set back recovery. In others, doubling up accidentally can create an emergency situation or even death to the pet.

This is why Peace Love Paws experienced pet sitters treat medication routines with the same level of care as veterinary professionals.

We fully understand medication and do not jump into pet care without fully understanding what the medication is, what it does, and how it should be given.

Relying on just a quick verbal explanation or a label on the bottle is not enough to understand the what, why and how of your pet’s medication. Different medications have different requirements. Some must be given with food, others on an empty stomach. Some need to be shaken, refrigerated, or administered slowly. Without understanding these details, we risk reducing effectiveness or causing discomfort.

We ask for clear, written instructions every time and at your meet & greet we watch you demonstrate application. Confirming all the specifics:

  • Medication name
  • Dosage
  • Timing
  • Method (pill, liquid, topical, injection)
  • Special instructions; we take notes on all medications
  • Possible side effects

We do not hesitate to ask follow up questions

A responsible sitter clarifies, not guesses, because overdosing can lead to toxicity/death, while under dosing may render treatment ineffective.

We avoid a medication mistake by

  • Double checking every dose before giving it
  • Using  proper measuring tools, not kitchen spoons
  • Labeling medications clearly if caring for multiple pets
  • Creating a simple checklist or medication log to reduce errors.

Our goal is to not skip or delay doses, so we schedule our visits with your pet’s medication times in mind.  We do this because timing matters, as some medications need to maintain a steady level in the pet’s system. Delays or missed doses can disrupt this balance.

We strive to avoid common issues

  • Not getting the full dose into the pet
  • Spilling liquid medication
  • Pets spitting out pills
  • A resistant pet

If your pet does not actually ingest the medication, the treatment is essentially skipped.

We try to combat “skipped” medication

  • Asking for demonstrations at our meet & greet
  • Using  tools like pill pockets when appropriate (with your approval)
  • Showing confidence and calm handling of your pet
  • Suggesting a few practice visits prior to your leaving if needed

We want your pet to be as comfortable with us as they are with you at your absence.

We take pride in monitoring pets with medications

Pet sitters shouldn’t focus only on giving the medication and forget to observe the pet afterward. We document daily for changes or observed differences we discover, and contact you if there is a concern.

We watch for things like

  • Vomiting or diarrhea
  • Lethargy or unusual behavior
  • Loss of appetite
  • Allergic reactions
  • Changes in the urine or poop

Early detection of side effects can prevent serious complications.

We strive for current knowledge on medications; such as their side effects and what to do if they occur. We keep our and your Vets emergency contact information easily accessible at all times with your scheduled visits.

We find that poor communication with Pet Parents is how accidents can happen. Pet owners want reassurance that their pet is receiving proper care, and we want to make sure your pet’s medications are part of our communication and understanding while they are in our care.

At our first visit to our last visit

  • All instructions will be reviewed
  • Locate medications and tools
  • Understand the pet’s temperament
  • Remain consistent, detail oriented, and proactive.

We have lots of practice with medications and know the questions to communicate to achieve the best outcome.

Your peace of mind

Giving medications is one of the most important responsibilities a pet sitter can take on. While mistakes can happen, most are preventable with the right knowledge and preparation.

We understand these common pitfalls and take steps to avoid them, to protect the pet’s health but also build trust and credibility, as a professional sitter.

In the end, it is not just about giving a pill or liquid. It is about providing safe, reliable care that pet parents can depend on.

Peace Love Paws Pet Sitters does not charge for administering medications for your pet(s), nor do we up charge for after hour fees to visit your pet(s). Having pets that need medication of our own, we feel our Pet Parents do not need to be charged extra for this service!
